P&G was founded by a candle maker William Procter and a soap maker James Gamble as a partnership in 1837. It went through a growth surge in its early days, during the American Civil War, during which it secured a contract with the Union Army to supply it with soaps and candles. Over the following decades, the company expanded its operations both within and outside the US and is currently the biggest player in global household and personal products industry with 65% of its revenues being generated outside the US.
